Sadly Alex Beckett has passed away.
An inspirational leader in our local chess scene, Alex Beckett, has died at the age of 86. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. The amount of time and energy he poured into the development of chess in Belfast will forever make him a legend within Ulster Chess. Alex Beckett’s funeral will be held at Knockbreda Church of Ireland Parish Church, Church Road, Belfast BT8 7AN at 11am this Friday 26th January.

In recognition of Ray's outstanding contribution to Ulster Chess , Belfast South Chess Club organised a presentation for him at The Bankers Club 20th September 2017. The presentation took place on the penultimate evening of the Eglantine Summer Tournament in which has Ray has been a participant.
Belfast South Open Chess Tournament 2017-18
This is a flexible open tournament similar to that of the Eglantine Summer Tournament. Players may play up to a maximum of 20 games but a minimum of 10 must be played to qualify for a prize. Regardless of the overall number of games played 2 must be within the last 3 weeks of the tournament to be eligible for prizes. To maximize the number of players receiving prizes, in the event of a player being eligible for a grading as well as a 1st/Runner- up prize, the grading prize will be awarded to the next best player. There will also be 2 prizes of £10 for the best game played before and after the Xmas break. For grading purposes the latest UCU ratings list will be used. Players will be assigned a grading band according to the tournament entry list. As far as practicable but not exclusively, pairings will be made within grading bands. There will be a first prize of £60 and £40 to the runner up based on players overall % score. There will also a grading prize for each band to the player with the best percentage score. Venue: The Bankers Club 29- 31 Malone Road Belfast Dates: Monday 30 October – 18 December 2017 Monday 08 January - 26 March 2018 * Please note that in order to keep to the above schedule there will be a tournament night following UCU weekend tournaments * Time: 7.30pm – 10.30pm ( ! hr 30 mins per clock) Entry Fee: £25 to non-club members and those club members only playing in the tournament . Cheques can be made payable to Belfast South Chess Club and given to the Controller or David Ruben. Tournament Controller : Neil Green Players are advised that in the event of a dispute games will be adjourned for adjudication by a committee of the players convened by the Controller.

Belfast South Open Chess Tournament 2017-18
The final round of the Tournament and prize-giving took place on 27 March 2018. This flexible tournament was a very flexible one with an unscheduled change of venue and a switch from Monday to Tuesday night in January 2018. Particular thanks to QUB club for hosting the second half of the tournament.
