Muldoons pull away

(B&D League 2015/16 Week 4) Muldoons 1 are the sole Division 1 leaders after beating The A Team, while rivals QUB 1 fell to defeat against Ballynafeigh 1.

Division 1

  • QUB 1 1.5-3.5 Ballynafeigh 1
  • The A Team 2-3 Muldoons 1
  • CS Lewis Lions 5-0 Bangor Groomsport

Muldoons took the lead in Division 1 after a 3-2 win over The A Team (for whom Ray Devenney (1795) scored a fine win over Gareth Annesley (1927); the other boards, however, went according to the ratings). This was after Ballynafeigh 1 finally got their first win of the season against former joint leaders QUB 1, despite the best efforts of Milad Foozoni (1419) who claimed the scalp of Brendan Jamison (1670). In the other match, the CS Lewis Lions whitewashed a severely depleted Bangor Groomsport squad.

Division 2

  • Muldoons 2 3-2 CS Lewis Witches
  • Fruithill 1-4 Kelly's Heroes
  • Ballynafeigh 2 4.5-0.5 NI Civil Service

Fruithill were soundly beaten by Kelly's Heroes in their first-versus-second encounter on Monday night; the new second-placed team are Ballynafeigh 2, who would have whitewashed NICS were it not for the efforts of Geoff Hindley (1042) who held Chris Black (1528) to a draw. Muldoons 2 defeated the CS Lewis Witches in the other match.

Division 3

  • Ballynafeigh 3 3-2 QUB 3
  • Ballynafeigh 4 2-3 Bangor Wannabees
  • QUB 2 3.5-1.5 Andrew's Army

Bottom side QUB 3 achieved their best result of the season against Ballynafeigh 3, coming within half a point of securing a draw. In the upset of the week, Ben Campbell (782) defeated David Seaby (1116) while Alan York also did well, beating Barney McGahan. However, the home side's experience proved to be too much on the other boards. There was drama in the top-of-the-table clash between QUB 2 and Andrew's Army; the score on the boards was a 2.5-2.5 draw, however, the Army's board 5, Alwyn Pollock, had turned out for Bangor Groomsport in their defeat to the CS Lewis Lions earlier in the week. As a result, his win over Abdullah Ali was reversed, giving QUB 2 a 3.5-1.5 win and a 5.5 point lead in the table. Last but not least, in the week's other match, the Bangor Wannabees defeated Ballynafeigh 4 3-2.
