Odds Tournament

Played at the Belfast Boat Club on Sunday 25th May 2008

An anonymous donor put up £500 towards an odds tournament to be organised by the Ulster Chess Union. This was played over five rounds on the Swiss system. Odds were calculated according to the difference in rating between opponents, as set out below.

Pawn & Move

The stronger player takes Black and removes their f7 pawn.

101-150

Pawn & 2 Moves

The stronger player takes Black and removes their f7 pawn. White makes 2 moves, neither of which may cross the 4th rank.

151-200

Pawn & Draw

The stronger player takes Black and removes their f7 pawn. The weaker player wins if the outcome is a draw.

201-250

Knight

The stronger player takes White and removes their b1 knight.

251-300

Knight & move

The stronger player takes black and removes their b8 knight.

301-350

Knight & draw

The stronger player takes White and removes their b1 knight. The weaker player wins if the outcome is a draw.

351-400

Rook*

The stronger player takes White and removes their a1 rook & their pawn at a2 is moved to a3.

401-550

Rook & Move*

The stronger player takes Black and removes their a8 rook & their pawn at a7 is moved to a6.

551-600

Rook, Move & Draw*

The stronger player takes Black and removes their a8 rook. & their pawn at a7 is moved to a6. The weaker player wins if the outcome is a draw.

601-650

Rook, Pawn & Move*

The stronger player takes Black and removes their a8 rook & f7 pawn & their a7 pawn is moved to a6.

651-700

2 Bishops

The stronger player takes White and removes their 2 bishops.

701-750

2 Bishops & Draw

The stronger player takes White and removes their 2 bishops. The weaker player wins if the outcome is a draw.

751-800

Rook & Knight*

The stronger player takes White and removes their a1 rook & g1 knight and their pawn at a2 is moved to a3.

801-900

Rook, Knight & Draw*

The stronger player takes White and removes their a1 rook & g1 knight and their pawn at a2 is moved to a3. The weaker player wins if the outcome is a draw.

901-999

Queen

The stronger player takes White and removes their Queen.

1000-1150

Queen & Draw

The stronger player takes White and removes their Queen. The weaker player wins if the outcome is a draw.

1151-1299

Capped Knight

The stronger player takes White. They must deliver mate with their Knight that started at b1 or lose. The loss of the Knight or any normal draw situation results in a loss for the stronger player.

1300+

*When a player gives the odds of a Rook they may move their King as though to castle with the Rook given, provided the square of the missing Rook has been unoccupied throughout the game, and provided the ordinary conditions as to squares and the King are complied with.
