One Day Chess

#6 Irish Press 4th June 1983

The short season of one-day chess tournaments began last Saturday at Ards Arena as part of Newtownards Civic Week. In the Senior Section, one of the youngest competitors, Niall Carton, (Newcastle) shared first prize on 5 points out of 6 with Dubliner David Smith, with Fisherwick's Arthur Pinkerton last year's joint winner just a half-point away third. In fourth place, on 3½ points came hometown player Jonathan Galloway and UCU President Ron Henderson (Bangor).

In the Intermediate Section, Roger Beckett (Fisherwick) was glad to share first prize with Bangor's Fred McDonald and CIYMS's John Strawbridge on 5 points, despite a last-round defeat by McDonald (shades of Downpatrick under 12 tournament, as our regular readers will know). Roger's father, Alex, shared fourth place with grading prizewinner Pat Carton junior (Newcastle) and Neil Tweedie (Downpatrick) on 4 points. Finally, the bottom seed, St. John the Baptist schoolboy Harry ball, burst on the chess scene with a splendid 3½ points.

In this recent game from the Dundalk Open, the joint winners of the Newtownards Senior shows how attacking on both flanks pays dividends:
