San Franciscan Paul Whitehead, on holiday in ireland, raced to his second successive Open title in a fortnight at the Belfast Festival Tournament in Queen's university with 5 out of 6 points. K. Hynes (Deansgrange) was second on 4½ points while joint third on 4 points came T. Clarke (CIYMS), C. O'Sullivan (Malahide), and P. Carton (Raheny), with the grading prize going to J. Mearns (Newtownards).
In the Intermediate tournament, A. Waterman (NUU) "soaked" up the pressure to share first prize with N. Mulholland (Bangor), K. Greer (Fisherwick), R. Henderson (Bangor) and T. O'Sullivan (Malahide) on 4½ out of 6 while D. Murray (Post Office) and D. Haughey (Fisherwick) took the grading prizes. St. Malachys College dominated the Junior tournament with young G. McIlroy champion on 5½ out of 6 and "old boy" P. Lambe second on 5 points. P. Moclair (Newcastle) was third while N. Stewart (Carrick) and P. Walker (BRA) took the grading prize.
One day tournaments take place on the next two Saturdays starting at 10 a.m.
This Saturday's is at the Ards Arena, Comber Road, Newtownards (£4 entries S. Livingston, 1A Frenshaw Road, Newtownards Tel. 815065), while next Saturday's on 4th June is at the Guildhall Derry with £800 prize money in 4 divisions (details from E.
